From sketch to Final art of Errol Flynn as Robin Hood.

1.      1.  I found this photo of Errol Flynn. As you can see it is only a detail part shot of his face which I found very nice and it got my attention immediately.

2. I decided to draw it, but…

 

 

1.      3. … thought about his movie as Robin Hood and went looking for a photo to see his costume for it in that movie. I could have also watched the movie to search for more details if I wanted to do a figurative portrait instead. The photo with him as Robin Hood had enough details for me to work with.

2.       4. I decided to incorporate them and his hair- and beard style with the head-shot I particularly liked very much.

5. I sketched lightly around to see what would be the best to incorporate all.

 

   6. After some sketching and looking at the image of him as Robin Hood I distributed all and added some more until I thought it had enough detail for a portrait and balance to finally begin to draw some shadows.

27. I always begin a Portrait with the eyes. I love to draw eyes. Windows of the soul.

 8.  9.     I worked more on his face to get a handle on it and make it as accurate as I wanted it to be.

 9.  9.    The light and shadow of his face also determine which now have to be in the rest of the portrait on what he wears and such.

10. Thinking about the background I finally decided to make it a simple dark one instead of a forest or whatever as in this portrait my aim was really Errol Flynn. 

 

 11.  After a while I abandon the images of him all together and add and work around the light and shadows as much as I want to, independent of his photo.

   12.I love to play around with light and shadows when I have not to make an accurate rendition of an image I have been given to reproduce in a drawing in any style and medium required.

  13.I love to create around images of persons to try and let my imagination flow and what it tells me.

  14. In this one it was for a play and my contribution to draw or paint a celebrity who had been in the role of the character of Robin Hood in one time of his career.

15. So Errol Flynn it was.
